New Poll: Time, Reporting and Cost Are Top Three Burdens Impacting Governance, Risk, and Compliance Initiatives

Segregation of Duties (SOD), Securing Sensitive Information, and Data Change Management Remain Top Priorities for Improving Internal Controls

LAS VEGAS--Time, onerous reporting requirements and issues of cost remain the primary burdens affecting support for corporate Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) initiatives, according to a report released by the Oracle Application User Group (OAUG) at their annual conference, Collaborate 07. The survey, conducted by Unisphere Research and sponsored by LogicalApps, found that among the four hundred respondents, the top priorities for improving internal controls are Segregation of Duties (SOD), securing sensitive information, and data change management.

Almost five years into Sarbanes-Oxley, we still see many organizations relying on manual controls, so its no surprise that the time dedicated to support compliance activities is the number one burden cited by the OAUG community, said Carla Fitzgerald, senior vice president of Marketing at LogicalApps. Fortunately, our customers have proven that compliance doesnt have to be a business drain, but that by automating controls using embedded governance, business processes can improve and resources can be redirected to the actual running of the business.

According to the survey, 51% of respondents indicate time as the main burden placed on them in supporting GRC initiatives. In organizations with more than 5,000 employees, 80% require four or more full-time employees to manage data compliance alone. 36% of respondents said that reporting is the biggest obstacle to effectively implementing GRC initiatives. Surveys of OAUG members have indicated that more than 40% are required to generate more than 100 reports per month for the business, mainly from financial and production systems.

Other findings from the survey respondents:

  • 38% consider Segregation of Duties as their top priority for improving controls to meet GRC objectives
  • 36% are focusing on data security and privacy as a key GRC priority
  • 34% are concerned about a related issue, change management
